1. SONG: THE
FINAL COUNTDOWN In studio Dj Enzo and Sonia (thanks to Elisa for the translation) Enzo: special dedicated to Sonia: hi! Enzo: how come your passion and love for Sonia: when they arrived in Enzo: you were very young! Sonia: I was 11 years old. Enzo: crikey! A precocious love I would say... Sonia: precocious yes... I fell in love, first of all, of their song “the
final countdown”, that was played at all the radios and then later in april/may, I’ve discovered them from also from a physical
point of view, so I’ve learned to know them. Enzo: and does this passion continue after so
many years? Sonia: yes, sure! Rather, it’s always stronger that never... because when I
was a child, they were my idols but I used to listen them only on the radio
or to read the interviews only on the news paper. Now you don’t
read about them so much but they are come back* again and I could see them in
person, from a point of view absolutely live. Enzo: so, in the next two hours you are going to
know, thin night,
Enzo: a big radio special totally dedicated to
Europe... so, Sonia, Sonia: during the “ ’80 years”, they were friends,
they played soccer together, they ran with motorbike together, they gathered
into a garage to play and finally come also their moment. In Enzo: why Sonia: first of all I would say that the first prize of the contest was a
record contract and the boys could record their first album, called “ Enzo: in the beginning of their career, they used
to play a hard-rock music, than it become more
commercial. What happened? Sonia: they used to play a hard-rock music that they borrowed a lot from
Phil Lynott-Thin Lizzy
and hard-rock bands like this.. Then they recorded a
new unique sound, called “the final countdown” that persuaded their manager
very much and it become a great hit in all the
world. So their manager used this unexpected success to promote their new
image around the world. This album was sold like a commercial one, but if we
listen to it, it’s very good, not like the commercial production of that
time. Enzo: in 1987 explodes the Europemania.
Did you get involved in this phenomenon? Sonia: yes, sure. There were crazy looks, and their
songs always on the radio... so the band started to have a lot of supporters.
Many admired them for their strange look and others for their songs. Enzo: about that time I remember a song that you
can announce... Sonia: “carrie”! 3. SONG: CARRIE (live ’87) (thanks
to Stefania for the translation) Enzo: A very soft song! We have chosen an
unusual version of the sweet Carrie, the live one. After the golden age what happened to
the band? Sonia: Actually, the golden age went on.
The Final Countdown was the real breakthrough with 10 millions of
albums sold. Out of this world went fine too, because it reached the 4th-5th
position in the charts after all. Enzo: So they kept enjoying the success of
the previous album… Sonia: Out of this world is a very good
album indeed! It features the new guitar-player Kee
Marcello who replaced John Norum. John had left the
band because he couldn’t accept the commercial policy imposed by the manager.
So, Out of this world got a good success. After a short break, the band comes back
with the album Prisoners in Paradise. In that time the band met a sticky
situation. The record company imposed a certain music style which didn’t
fully satisfy the guys and some dissatisfaction and variance started arising.
Enzo: The band takes a break and each one of
the guys starts a solo career! No one of them earned much fame, I would say… Sonia: Well… in 1995 Joey recorded a
beautiful album called A place to call home, he was at Festivalbar and gained a fairly good success. The fan
club helped promote the Italian tour of Joey. The following 2 solo albums
didn’t get much promotion and consequently they were less known and then the
fans were waiting for Enzo: And the band did come back!!! We know
that the band is now working on a new album… Sonia: Yes! The tour is going to end
next fall with some gigs in Enzo: Tell us something about the ‘live
feeling’! For those who ‘live’ the music of Sonia: Definitely! The guys are really
fresh and spontaneous on stage. This is something I like to emphasize because
it’s an aspect of the band I appreciate a lot! They don’t use any make up or
any other artificial devises. It’s just themselves
on stage! You can see a wild Joey Tempest… he’s 42 now… and he jumps on
stage, goes back and forth all the time, rotating his mic
stand like he did back in the golden age and he blows your mind… I’ve been to 4 concerts and every time
it was great! Especially when you stand in the front row, you feel as a part
of Enzo: And for the first time I can say “I’ve been flashed
by something!!!”. Let’s play now another 4. SONG: READY OR NOT |
