5. SONG: WAKE
UP CALL (thanks
to Elena for the translation) Enzo: «Welcome
back to ‘Flashed by’. We are going to spend the night together getting to
know Sonia: «Hi Alessandra!» Alessandra: «God
evening everybody! A warm greeting to you Sonia and a big hi also to all the
friends tuned to the radio tonight to listen to this program!». Enzo: «How’s
it going?» Alessandra: «Very
well, thank you». Enzo [to Sonia and Alessandra]: «So
you know each other. There is a certain synergy between you two girls, am I
wrong?» Alessandra: «Of
course there is!». Enzo: «You
stay constantly in touch via mail, chat, forum etc., don’t you?» Alessandra: «Sure,
we are always in touch, especially in virtue of this all-pervasive passion we
share, i.e. the same passion which got us to establish such a close
friendship!». Enzo: «How did
your passion for Alessandra: «Well,
it all began in 1987, and it happened just by chance, thanks to my mum who
bought a magazine containing the splendid face of joey
tempest pictured in one of its pages, and I immediately fell in love with
him!». Enzo: «And
what happened then? Was your hearth throbbing?». Alessandra: «Yes,
definitively! I experienced every possible kind of feeling and emotional reaction,
ranging from wild excitement to tears of joy…just by looking at his picture!
Then I listened to the mythical song “The Final countdown”, and this is how
my huge love for Enzo:
«Alessandra, listen, what’s your favourite Alessandra: «I would
surely answer “the final countdown”, as it was the song which made me fall in
love with Sonia: «Alessandra, I was just
talking to Enzo about a nice anecdote concerning
you. You have a very pretty tattoo representing Joey’s signature. Could you
please tell us something about this?». Alessandra: «It was
not premeditated! It was just an idea which suddenly came up to my mind. As I
am sure I’ll foster my passion for Sonia: «I was there as well, but
we didn’t have the opportunity to properly get to know each other on that
occasion». Alessandra:
«Let’s say that when I found my hero before me (‘cause he’s my hero!), a
genial insight came up to me. I asked him an autograph on my shoulder, and he
was very kind to make it! That’s how this idea came about». Enzo: «Could
you possibly reconstruct the scene for all the people who are listening to us
tonight?». Alessandra:
«At first Joey looked a bit staggered…he was probably expecting me to hand
him a scrap of paper, so when I offered him my shoulder he burst into laughters!». Enzo: «And
what did you ask him?». Alessandra: «Can you
sign here please? And then he smiled. Actually, with hindsight I can say it
wasn’t properly a smile. It looked more like a sneer, as though he meant to
tell me: “why are you asking this to me? Are you mad or something?”. And he
even bit his lips! The following day I rushed back home and I had his
signature tattooed». Sonia: «Great! You remember,
Alessandra, we met again in Bardonecchia. Did you
show your tattoo to Joey then?». Alessandra:
«Unfortunately I didn’t have this opportunity. It was actually very late, he came
back to our hotel, but he looked extremely tired, and I didn’t want to pester
him. I preferred not to intrude his privacy, I think it is very important not
to do that. Enzo: «Ok
Alessandra, thanks very much indeed». Alessandra: «Can I
say hello to all the members of the ESC? Thank you to all of you! And
remember that
7. SONG: MORE
THAN MEETS THE EYE A guest star at phone: the musician
Ego (thanks again to Elena for the translation) Enzo:
«Welcome back to ‘Flashed by’. Dear Sonia, I didn’t know there were so many
Europe fans around, nor was I aware of the existence of such a big fan club
in Sonia: «Absolutely. It’s a
marvellous fan club, it’s the Europe Supporters Club founded by Annah and Laurah Costa, to
which we send our best greetings». Enzo: «We now
have our friend Ego on the phone. Hello Ego!». Ego: «Hello
everybody. How’s it going?» Enzo: «Are you
enjoying this special on Ego: «It’s
going very well. And I couldn’t help taking part in this special, not least
because Enzo: «Your
first flings?». Ego: «No, no,
I didn’t mean to say this…my memories linked to Sonia: «Ego, listen: which was
the first Ego: «I was
totally fulgurated by “Wings of tomorrow”, dating back to 1984». Enzo: «Oh, so
I’m starting to realize that you’ are not that young….». Ego: «Oh,
yes, I was Enzo: «Well,
we’d better call you “Uncle Ego”!» Ego: «Of
course! Uncle Ego! And this does nothing but confirm that Enzo: «Ego,
I’d like to ask you something. Ego: «I have
to say I was positively impressed by their last album, which is a timeless
album, it really has no temporal allocation, and it brings us back to the
most authentic and rawest sonorities of worldwide hard-rock, so I’d say that,
in this respect, we find great musical insights, both from a guitar
perspective (I’m referring to John Norum), and also
from a compositional point of view». Enzo: «Now, Sonia: «As a proof of this, even
those Heavy-Metal fans who used to snub them, ’cause they viewed them as a
pop-group, now have reconsidered them. Ego: «I agree
with you, given that, as I said before, they establish that continuity thread
with the rock groups blooming in the seventies, with the Sacred Monsters of
that time, as it were, and they are still able to renew that kind of music
alongside big names who are still in action like the Deep Purple and the
Scorpions. Well, I strongly believe they are the embodiment of pure hard
rock, with their guitars and sonorities». Enzo: «We’re
talking about the genesis of music, after all». Ego: «Sure,
that from which all began, so to speak». Enzo: «And
let’s not forget the Black Sabbath!».
Ego: «Of
course. But I could mention many groups…the Black Sabbath, the Kiss. Well,
the Kiss have actually leant towards a too glamorous, image-dependent
direction». Enzo: «It was
on the 1978, it was then that this kind of music reached its peak, but even
the Rolling Stones evolved towards a more commercial tendency, for instance
with “I was meant for loving you baby”». Ego: «Oh yes,
you remember? [singing] ‘I was meant for loving you baby…..’. However, you
see, the first Sonia: «Great Ego!» Enzo: «Perhaps
it’s a matter of phonetic». Ego: «Yes, on
my view rock music is nourished by such a kind of sonority, phonetics and
pronunciation. Take the case of Italian Melodram.
If you go and listen to it you expect the lyric in Italian, and if you listen
to a Spanish Lyric it’s going to sound a bit odd…So I think there are certain
kinds of sonority associated to a specific kind of musical metric, but maybe
we’re going too far away with this issue…. Well, all this is just to say that
the fulguration which concerned me, my first approach to the music of Europe
was thanks through an instrumental piece, called “Aphasia”, a Greek word
which means “Without words”…so there is a specific reference to the
meaning……. It’s a three and a half minutes-long piece, and I would strongly
recommend it to you, or invite you to listen to it one more time, as we find
John Norum at the very first stage of his career,
and it allows us to foresee the John Norum of ‘the
Final Countdown”…So it was a strong impact. Enzo: «So,
Ego, I understand that you are quite familiar with music, you’re a musician,
a guitarist, and you tend to analyse music from a technical point of view;
but I’d like to ask you: is there any piece of Europe you enjoy even though
your appreciation has not mainly to do with its musical structure? Ego: «Well, I
think ‘Cherokee’ and ‘Wings of tomorrow’
are rock pieces who, taken at a face value, present a commercial structure,
but they actually display a dismaying geniality with regard to their
composition or the riffs which should never be underestimated». Enzo: «Ok Ego,
thanks a lot for your participation in this program». Ego: «And
you! Thanks very much for the chance you gave me!». 8. SONG: ROCK THE NIGHT |
