8. SONG: ROCK THE NIGHT

(thanks again to Stefania for the translation)

Enzo: We keep receiving more emails at our address info@radioflashfm.net…

Now we have a very nice message coming from Turin

Sonia: Yes… Stefania, 30 years old from Turin, says “There would be so many things to say about my passion for EUROPE but I’ll try to sum up my sensations”

First she explains how fantastic it was to see the band live again after such a long time in many concerts around Europe in 2004 and 2005. “Those emotions will stay with me forever”, she says. “EUROPE are musicians able to involve you totally and, one aspect that cannot be neglected, they are always very friendly to their fans. When they are on stage they are able to transmit so much energy. Just join one of their concerts and you’ll realize that! I’m very proud to be a EUROPE fan!”

Enzo: Oh… it’s very nice when the fans can’t explain by words what EUROPE means to them! And then there is a certain understanding among you…

Sonia: Yes absolutely! The EUROPE fans are a big family!

Enzo: Do fans also get engaged or married?

Sonia: It happened actually! There is a fan… it’s been a long time since I heard from her… Her name is Marilena and she’s married to a EUROPE fan and they have a 15 year-old-boy who is a EUROPE fan himself!

Enzo: And I guess his name is Joey…

Sonia: No, no… his name is Nicolň… Hi Nicolň!… and his nickname is Johnnino like John Norum!

Enzo: OK! Let’s go on with a another song. This is a ‘Flashed by EUROPE’- special here on Radio Flash…

9. SONG: DREAMER

10. SONG: DANGER ON THE TRACK (live ’87)

(thanks to Alessandro for the translation)

Enzo: Sonia is here with us tonight, a fan of that great rock band called Europe, there is also Alessandro from Genoa on the telephone: good evening Ale!

Alessandro: Good evening all.

Sonia: Hi Alessandro.

Alessandro: Hi.

Enzo: So you know each other thanks to the fanclub and forum, you go to concerts together and share Europe’s unreleased stuff, don’t you?

Sonia: Yes, definitely; besides, Alessandro wrote a report about Kee Marcello for my site?

Alessandro:Yes, exactly, that’s me.

Sonia: He wrote a beautiful report and also took some pictures with Kee Marcello, former Europe guitarist.

Alessandro:Exactly.

Enzo: There’s an “up-and-running” community about Europe, isn’t there?

Alessandro:Yes, there is, absolutely.

Enzo: I ask you how you became such a keen on Europe fan: this is a question we ask everybody and we’d like to know how you all have been “shocked” by Europe or, let me say, how you all got “flashed” by Europe (joke about the name of the radio: RADIOFLASH).

Alessandro:Well, it’s an normal question but I’m very pleased to answer: everything began back in Autumn 1986, listening to the intro of  “The Final Countdown”, and I guess the same thing happened for many other fans; then everything just got better and better, from watching “The Final Countdown” video-clip,  to buying all their records and step by step becoming love of their music, of everything that this fantastic rock-band’s communicates, and I have followed this group for all these years and keeping them close to my heart.

Enzo: Another question Ale, did your passion for Europe take you to imitate their look or whatever?

Alessandro: Yes, it did. At first their hair styles seemed really odd to me but then I started to like them so much that I began to grow my hair as well: you can imagine how sorry my parents were about that!

Enzo: And now is your hairstyle the same as Joey Tempest’s?

Alessandro: Oh no, not at all! Not only for natural reasons but because of university and work I had to renew my look a little bit, so my hair has been a little more “normal  for some years now, if you can say that.

Enzo: Yes, more in keeping with….

Alessandro: …more in keeping with what being a 33 years old guy, if you also consider that I’m working for a large Company, that’s it.

Enzo: So, what do you remember about that period?

Alessandro: Well, …I remember….. I was 14 years and I was amazed while listening to Hard Rock Music for the first time thanks to Europe and to their most “famous” songs; I remember that I was entering a new world, the world of Hard Rock and Heavy Metal music that had been unknown to me until that time; then I started to discover many other bands but keeping in my heart what Europe has always meant to me, that is to say the beginning of “everything”, speaking about musical tastes, but most of all something special because of their music, because of what Europe represent as a band and because of what it means to me as a fan; I also think it is the same for many other fans all over the world.

Sonia: Alessandro, maybe you can explain which is the difference between Europe and other bands: for example, have you been to their back-in-Italy show on November 4th?

Alessandro: Of course, even though I have missed the very first song, unfortunately.

Sonia: Oh, it’s a pity because that was very good and there was a great introduction also... can you please tell us your feelings and explain how Europe are live and, most of all, what they are today?

Alessandro: Well, Europe today is a very well-fitted band that is back on the road to play for passion again and they are here to stay: the guys want to keep on doing what they’ve always loved again and again, without sticking to the commercial phenomenon they were part of during the eighties and the early nineties.

Enzo: Ale, I have a special question for you because that was the period of Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet and so on, there were also really passionate fanclubs of those bands: did you have any quarrel with any fan of those bands?

Alessandro: Shall we talk about quarrels? Shall I tell you how I shielded Europe against all those slanderers who came out right after “getting drunk” with “The Final Countdown”, which was a song that made everyone’s head spin a little bit; nobody knows why many of those who had been Europe fans in the first place suddenly became Europe slanderers. I’ve never understood the reason why this happened but I’ve always supported Europe because I found something in this band that many other people didn’t, neither back then nor nowadays, probably.

Sonia: Maybe it all happened because many people only looked at their pretty faces, they only cared about their look without listening to their records, as a matter of fact they only know “The Final Countdown”: maybe genuine Europe music is not very well known, isn’t it?

Alessandro: Yes, that’s the point, unfortunately, and I think that this also happened as a consequence of the way the band was managed at that time.

Enzo: Therefore, Europe music is supposed to be declined for some fans while for some other fans, instead, it has gone through a sort of natural evolution, apart from the commercial success that helped spread their name all over the world: they kept on going their own way caring about their deeper feelings and forgetting the commercial side, didn’t they?

Alessandro: Yes, definitely, I totally agree with you: I looked beyond their image almost quickly: without any doubt their look was catchy and it was a big help in letting people get to know them, but their music was the most important part for me back then and it is even more today; their comeback is fantastic.

Enzo: Alessandro, I wind up our conversation asking you whether or not Europe music helped you win any girls’ love (laughs). You can think about it until December 31st 2005 if you want, there is no problem (laughs).

Alessandro: Well, many years have passed but there is something I’m really happy about: my girlfriend had a superficial knowledge about Europe back in the late eighties but she has just started to appreciate them thanks to “Start From The Dark”, their latest record, and she took me to both their gigs in November 2004 and in March 2005: now she enjoys their music and I can tell you that probably this is the nicest thing that relates Europe to my private life; hence, apart from what Europe was in the past, now they are something important that can join people together in the name of love for the music.

Sonia: Yes, definitely, so let’s call all the fans to go to their gigs because that is the situation where the band Europe is at its best, isn’t it?

Alessandro: Yes, for sure: I can still remember their concert in Genoa back in 1989 but even though I don’t feel nostalgia for the old days, since they are over, I keep those memories in my heart together with my happy memories of the concerts that Europe played last March and last November: this is something that makes me believe that almost 17 or 18 years have never passed.. so… a Europe gig is an amazing experience: it is a concert that can be as ordinary as many other bands concerts but, in my opinion, it has something special because maybe I like Europe more than any other person who listens to their music with a superficial attitude, that’s all.

Enzo: Thank you Ale, say hello to Genoa for us and see you soon with another special radio show about Europe: in the meantime keep on listening to our radio.

Alessandro: Of course I’ll do; I say goodbye to all of you: thank you for this special programme and “Good Luck”.

Sonia: Thanks, bye Alessandro.

Alessandro: Bye bye to you all, see you soon…
